Over the last few months, several Chinese restaurants marked their opening on Penang island, and the latest to go full swing is Ming Garden. Located in Penang Times Square, the restaurant is decorated in a modern Chinese style.

The efficient supervisor comes over to introduce what the menu had to offer as soon as we were seated. As with most Chinese restaurants, the supervisor verbally listed out the popular and signature dishes. We chose several dishes to go along with their signature Peking duck and braised goose web.

This time around our Penang food outing in the Mainland continue with Teochew cuisines at the popular Restaurant Chao Zhou. This Teochew style restaurant also serves a wide selection of dim sum for breakfast and numerous cuisines for lunch and dinner. I chanced upon it through its restaurant website. Heard that their dim sum is very popular too. Together with my In-laws, we made the trip to this restaurant which is located in Chai Leng Park, Penang Mainland. The restaurant has a large air-conditioned dining hall and a pleasant outdoor sitting area.

Straight to the dishes we indulged that evening!

We started with the superb deep fried items. There is a good variety to choose from and varies based on the customer choices. We had three different types of items, with the fried cho, ku chye kueh and prawns wrap with crisp vermicelli. All the deep fried items were served hot and crispy…very fragrant. Excellent appetizer to kick off the meal.

A unique food blog post especially for chocolate lovers!

On my latest culinary adventure in Kuala Lumpur, I got an invitation to join a Media Chocolate Cooking Class and an enticing Chocolate High-Tea Delights at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur. The Chocolate Cooking Class was conducted by Chef Holger Deh, the Executive Pastry Chef who delighted us with his chocolate making using cocoa from Cacao Barry, world known for its premium products.

*** Update:  Kozue has closed

Since Kozue’s opening in Penang Gurney Plaza in December last year, business in this modern and chic restaurant has been good; and has since developed a solid group of regular customers. My family have been to Kozue’s several times and have tasted many of its innovative fusion dishes which can be seen in my previous post.

The day started with a “yum cha” session at the old eatery, Aik Hoe Restaurant located in Carnavon Street. This restaurant which occupied two shop houses still managed to retain its old nostalgic charm after fifty over years. The fixtures of old ceiling fans with flooring of small squares of blue and white tiles still remain there after all these years, making this place a real heritage in its own way.

Nothing much have changed and the restaurant still has the very ‘Chinese old school look’, even still with its signature metal chairs. The shop’s name has been embedded into the metal chair itself; a real rare find nowadays.

Last Sunday, we went over to Butterworth to try out the seafood at Ong Cheng Huat Seafood Restaurant. Not knowing the exact location, I went to search for it in the Google map. With the helpful directions and the map in hand, we drove over to Bagan Lallang.

The place was crowded as it was lunch hour. We were introduced to their fermented coconut water, known by the locals as Tuak.  It is a popular drink in this restaurant. A one liter bottle cost RM5. It tasted a bit sourish sweet and has a gassy feeling. Recommended to try out this unusual drink.
