May is the month to savor Italian cuisine at Swez Brasserie, located at Eastin Hotel Penang. Delectable spread of Italian cuisine from the Land of Michelangelo is available during lunch, hi-tea and dinner throughout the month.

Cheese lovers will enjoy the panzanella salad. Made with fresh tomatoes, Mozarella cheese, crusty bread and crisp greens, the salad comes with condiment of olive oil and vinaigrette. Another appetizer is the bruschetta. The version is covered with toppings of chopped mushroom, chicken and seafood.

The cream of tomato soup has a remarkably pure tomato flavor, with the right tomato’s acidity, basil oil and cream. There is a rotation of soup, with choices of minestrone soup and seafood cream soup.

At 42º La Boheme, we discovered new textures and flavours during our lunch visit. Opened since July, Mathieu Guegan and his wife Huvi have created a French cafe in a heritage house. Coupled with simple decorations and some old collectibles, the ambience is casual. The only visible sign of the cafe in bustling Jalan Sri Bahari, is the small wooden sign, 42º La Boheme, hanging on the front gate.

Mathieu, who also runs the kitchen, learnt to bake since he was 12 and has spent years working in some restaurants. He makes his own bread and desserts and offers lovely pastries, galettes and quiches. Besides the short and fresh menu, a variety of desserts can be found displayed at the counter. The chalkboard showcases a selection of pizzas available only on weekends.

The recently launched Campbell House in George Town is home to Il Bacaro Venetian Restaurant. This slice of classic Italian dining is within walking distance of Tho Yuen and Tai Tong Dim Sum House.

The restaurant serves its cuisine the Il Bacaro way, which is based on a traditional Venetian backstreet tavern. It’s where one can enjoy authentic Italian dishes served in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Fancy some Hainanese cuisine in Penang? Chances are the choices are not aplenty as Hainanese cooks are few to come by and the younger generation is not keen on learning the trade.

But you can make your way to Yeng Keng Cafe & Bar in Yeng Keng Hotel, a heritage boutique hotel on Chulia Street at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town. In addition to Western cuisine, Yeng Keng Café & Bar came out with a selection of classic Hainanese dishes.

On my hotel dining reviews in Kuala Lumpur, I have checked out several dining outlets in Renaissance Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and one of them was Med.@Marche-Live. The open concept restaurant offers a relaxed and casual dining atmosphere, with air-conditioned dining room and great terrace sitting.

These days, the restaurant brings a new dining experience to diners with the presence of Australian Paul Lewis as the Executive Sous Chef.  He took over the kitchen this year and has since made his debut in the MIGF 2010. We were privileged to meet up with the chef and at the same time sample some of his dishes from the menu, which focuses on unique Italian specialties and ‘comfort’ food!

If you are looking for freshly baked pizza and tasty pasta, head over to Ecco Cafe. This cafe located in an old shop house in Penang has very simple and basic furnishings. It is located in Chulia Street and hence it is no surprise to see many tourists patronizing this cafe.

We were told that most of the food is made from scratch including the pizza dough, noodles and the bread.  We opt for two thin crust pizzas to share among us … the Fungi Pizza with sliced tomatoes, mushroom and basil (RM16) and the Louisiana Pizza with salami, onion, tomato, olives, fresh chili and basil (RM17). We liked the thinness of the crust which is a bit crisp at the edges.

A plate of Salvatone Pasta comes with rings of salami, olives, mushrooms, onions and basil (RM15) and it is a good size portion for us to share.

My son is enjoying himself all right…

Chicken Pot Pie with fillings of chicken cubes, peas, carrots, potatoes in a creamy sauce and baked with a pie-crust. It comes with a side salad and two bread sticks (RM16). It is a delicious pie.

All of us had the freshly ground coffee which was served in a plunger (RM10), complementing the delightful dessert, Crème Burlee (RM10). This is an egg custard pudding topped with a layer of hard caramel. The waiter heated up the top layer of brown sugar until golden brown with a blowtorch, much to our amazement.

All of us enjoyed the food and were stuffed in the end. If you love pizza and pasta and don’t mind dining in a bit cramp place, do drop by 402, Chulia Street. It is just a couple of shops up from the junction of Cintra Street. It is open daily from 11.30am to 2.30pm and from 6pm to 10.30pm except Sunday. Tel. no. 04 -2623178

On the slightly downside, it could be a bit noisy due to the heavy traffic on this busy street. Click here for the Map Location.

The Lone Pine Hotel is located along Batu Ferringhi and it is within walking distance to restaurants, shopping outlets and Penang’s famous ‘Ferringhi Night Bazaar’. It is a cozy place with its rooms facing the sea and the beautiful garden shaded by Casuarina trees.

There are two dining places in this hotel and we had our dinner at The Bungalow which offers local, international and also Hainanese cuisine. The restaurant has simple furnishing and decor. It offers outdoor and indoor sitting areas.

We requested for the outdoor sitting area under a big canopy so as to get a clearer picturesque view of the sunset and watch the on-going activities on the beach front. People were having fun riding up and down the stretch of beach on four wheelers and horses. This activities is hardly seen down town.

Enough of the scenery, now for what we came here for. Dinner! :D

When glancing through the menu, the first item that caught my attention was ‘The Bungalow Duet’. This uniquely named dish (RM19.80) is made up of deep-fried Hainanese Spring Rolls and Batu Maung satays. This dish is accompanied with a delicious spicy sauce, onions and cucumber pieces. I strongly recommend this appetizer dish.

I would like to emphasis on our next dish; the Chicken Macaroni Pie (RM24.00). The younger generations may not be well versed with this dish. Just ask anyone who have eaten it before, this dish might very well put a smile on their face.
How is this dish prepared? Well, this dish can be declared a true fusion between eastern and western culinary. Macaroni, carrots, button mushroom and chicken slices are cooked in a special sauce, and then baked with a layer of crust on top. The picture below may give you a better description. I find it not very original because as far as I know, tomato sauce was never use in making the gravy. Still my son love it and heard him saying “I wish I could have it every day!”.

Mouth Watering Curry Chicken Kapitan (RM24.00). This curry dish goes superbly well with rice. You can really taste the spices and herbs used to cook it.

Deep fried Inche Kabin (RM19.80), an all time favourite. No questions asked :D

Fried Ju Hu Char (RM17.80). This Nyonya dish was the vegetable that we had alongside our meaty dishes.

We were entertained by some live music performed by a triplet during the later part of the night. This was truly an enjoyable and relaxing outing for us, savoring delicious food and watching sunset at this charming place! The night scenery is equally as serene as the daytime.

The following is the location of the hotel, especially for those who are not too familiar with the Batu Ferringhi area.
