***The cafe has since closed down.

A drive down Bangkok Lane will lead you to a charming couture house where fashion designer Richard Rivalee works with his staff in designing beautiful gowns. The hard working man who also has a passion for cooking has since open up a cafe right beside his boutique.

I came to know about this place from my friend KS. I was told that its popularity is coupled by word-of-mouth recommendations by a lot of satisfied customers.

It is open for lunch daily except Sunday. For dinner it is on order basis. The menu is limited. On the day of our visit, Richard has prepared ayam kurma and curry chicken. The ayam kurma was stewed with potato and carrot with very mild gravy. The curry chicken was slightly hot spiced and rich in coconut milk. Each set meal comes with white rice, a hard boiled egg, acar and mango kerabu. The mango kerabu was fresh and fragrant with “laksa flower”. These set meals were accompanied with clear soup. We truly enjoyed this flavourful meal.

The small and neat kitchen where the food were prepared.

Richard took much time explaining to us on how he got his boutique and cafe started. A lot of effort and attention was put into decorating the cafe himself.

The flooring of the exterior area is laid with wood and certain paths are paved with stones. There is a water feature right in the centre of the area and potted plants line up the side of the wall. This setting puts you in a relaxing mood.

The exterior area provides customers with a choice of sittings : bench, couch or just laze around with some scatter pillows.

The small interior dinning area was filled with his personal collectibles of urns, jars and prints which makes this place interesting and colourful.

The pricing of the food in this little cosy cafe is very reasonable. Do check it out at 12, Bangkok Lane, Pulau Tikus.

What is “Kampar Fish Jelly”? Well everyone will presume something sweet. Actually it is Yong Tau Foo, which is mostly found in Kampar, Ipoh and KL. There are a few shops selling Yong Tau Foo in Penang and we usually visit this shop located in Sungai Nibong town (near Queensbay Mall). The clean and brightly lited shop is airy though it is located in middle of a row of shops.

Yong Tau Foo is basically fish paste stuffed into varieties of vegetables and tofu. The fish paste is very fresh and springy.

Fried ingredients are served separately and the rest of the ingredients comes in a bowl of clear and tasty soup. All goes well with choices of white rice, yam rice and even Hakka noodle with minced pork.

Another side dish – Beggar Chicken.

It was an enjoyable Yong Tau Foo lunch with glasses of  barley drink (foo chook yee mai).

To savour tasty Taiwanese food in Penang, the place to be is Kocha Taiwanese Delight in 229, Jalan Burma Road. This restaurant is walking distance from the famed biscuit shop, Him Heang. It is decorated with simple furniture, mainly rattan chairs and lots of knick knack plus several different sizes aquariums.
As for the food, there is a wide selection of noodles, rice and snacks in their menu to choose from. We ordered the sliced cold Drunken Chicken, Kimchi pork in hot plate, salted vegetables (kiam chye) and also the Dumplings in Beef Soup. There were five big dumplings in the bowl of slightly spicy soup. Being beef soup lovers, we give this dish a big thumbs-up.

The dishes that we had goes well with the rice but take note that their bowl of rice cost RM1.20..(bit pricey for plain white rice). Overall the food is very tasty and unique in its own way. Business starts from 12.00 noon right till 10.30pm. For reservations, do call 04 2275048.

Finding a car park space can be a bit difficult during peak hours as there are only a few parking lots right in front of the restaurant.

Yam rice for lunch? Yes,of course. How could I resist when my hubby suggested it. There are a few places in Butterworth selling it but we still prefer to frequent the stall in Bukit Mertajam, located behind Jalan Kulim. The stall is based in Kedai Makanan Hing Hing at Lorong Melor. It serves yam rice, preserved salted vegetable pork soup, stew soya sauce pork trotter as well as stew tofu and egg. Not to miss out the special chili paste with thick black sauce.

That’s a choice of having white rice or yam rice but most customers will opt for the latter. The rice is boiled with the yam (which is why the rice is so fragrant). The yam is soft and creamy…and I love to have more pieces of it.
Ordered two bowls of soup that comes with chinese celery and preserved salted vegetable. First bowl was mix ingredients of pork organs – stomach, liver, pork slices and meatballs. The other bowl consist of rectangular pieces of pig blood (congealed pig blood). Its jelly like structure is very smooth like tofu.

We also had the stew pork trotter as a side dish.

Up to now, we still can’t find any stalls selling this dish in the island…. so whenever we feel like having yam rice, we will take a short journey up to BM to enjoy this delicious food.

UPDATES :

* The stall has shifted to a new coffee shop located just nearby the old place. Do drop by Eleen blog’s for a detailed map to this place.
