This time around our Penang food outing in the Mainland continue with Teochew cuisines at the popular Restaurant Chao Zhou. This Teochew style restaurant also serves a wide selection of dim sum for breakfast and numerous cuisines for lunch and dinner. I chanced upon it through its restaurant website. Heard that their dim sum is very popular too. Together with my In-laws, we made the trip to this restaurant which is located in Chai Leng Park, Penang Mainland. The restaurant has a large air-conditioned dining hall and a pleasant outdoor sitting area.

Straight to the dishes we indulged that evening!

We started with the superb deep fried items. There is a good variety to choose from and varies based on the customer choices. We had three different types of items, with the fried cho, ku chye kueh and prawns wrap with crisp vermicelli. All the deep fried items were served hot and crispy…very fragrant. Excellent appetizer to kick off the meal.

Goreng pisang is a filling and tasty snack to have in between meals. There are a few Chinese stalls that I patronize and the Penang Tanjung Bungah Goreng Pisang stall is one of them. It is located on the left hand side of the road leading to Batu Feringghi and has been serving its customers for the past forty years.

Posted by: CK Lam    in Dessert, Hawker, Jelutong, Penang, Street Food

Many hawker stalls do sell the Chinese sweet dessert of Peanut Tong Sui. This particular stall that we visited is located at the corner of Perak Lane and Jalan Jelutong, right beside the famous Perak Lane Fish Beehoon. This stall sells peanut tong sui which is commonly known as thor tau jin th’ng or fah sang tong sui with choices of add-on goodies.

During the weekend, we had our dinner at a seafood stall in Gurney Drive. This place is well known for its seafood porridge but they do serve noodles and rice as well. There is a consistent crowd particularly during weekends.

With a wide varieties of fresh seafood ingredients to choose from…

Large orders of porridge and noodle are served pipping hot in claypots whereas a single serving is usually served in a bowl. You can add and mix any seafood in one claypot. We had a big pot of fish porridge and a bowl of fish with thick beehoon garnished with spring onions. The fresh fish contribute to the sweetness of the soup and is so delicious.

Fried mee tiau was very spongy.

Delicious fish head cooked with yam which we had on our earlier visit.

This seafood stall is in Public Cafe (next to the famed Song River Cafe), directly facing the sea and is only open for dinner.
