This time around our Penang food outing in the Mainland continue with Teochew cuisines at the popular Restaurant Chao Zhou. This Teochew style restaurant also serves a wide selection of dim sum for breakfast and numerous cuisines for lunch and dinner. I chanced upon it through its restaurant website. Heard that their dim sum is very popular too. Together with my In-laws, we made the trip to this restaurant which is located in Chai Leng Park, Penang Mainland. The restaurant has a large air-conditioned dining hall and a pleasant outdoor sitting area.

Straight to the dishes we indulged that evening!

We started with the superb deep fried items. There is a good variety to choose from and varies based on the customer choices. We had three different types of items, with the fried cho, ku chye kueh and prawns wrap with crisp vermicelli. All the deep fried items were served hot and crispy…very fragrant. Excellent appetizer to kick off the meal.

Heng Kee Restaurant is a traditional Chinese coffee shop located on the left hand side of China Street in Penang. For those who are not familiar with this part of town, China Street is directly in front of the Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Yin Teng). This place serves mainly chu char with variety of home-cooked style dishes.

It was much easier for us to patronized this place as it is open on Sunday. For the first dish of Curry Tumis, we chose to have the Kui Kau fish. The fresh pieces of fish were cooked in the appetizing tamarind gravy with lots of lady fingers and tomatoes. Its taste is less sourish and not as oily compared to those from Sin Kheng Aun Restaurant.

Posted by: CK Lam    in Bak Chang, Chinese, Dumpling, Events

Happy Duan Wu Festival to all my readers!

In line with tradition, every year my MIL prepares her own Bak Chang (rice dumpling).  This time around, I decided to put up a post in my food blog on this savory rice dumpling which is literally a meal on itself as it is stuffed with various types of ingredients.

Heavenly Chinese Roast Meat can be found at Sky and Star in Penang.

One of my favorite stall would be the one located on the ground floor of Sky Hotel on Chulia Street which is known for its high number of budget hotels and small cafes. You could easily spot  this blue-ish building with the stall ‘WAI KEE’ right in the front entrance which is a few doors down from Ecco Cafe.

Here you will find delicious assorted roast meat. Ordering comes in individual servings or in individual plate with an assortment of your favourite choice of meat. The good stuff that I usually order is the Siew Yoke, Siew Cheong and Char Siew. The Siew Yoke has a very crispy skin and also the right amount of salty flavor.

Fancy having a steaming hot bowl of chicken porridge or just plain white porridge together with two or three side dishes for dinner? We happen to stumble upon this stall located in a coffee shop at the junction of Kimberley Street/Jalan Kuala Kangsar (around Chowrasta Market) which sells this delicious food. It is open for dinner from 5.30pm onwards.

This bowl of chicken porridge/congee with chicken pieces and eu char koay cost RM3. It has the chicken sweetness in it and is served with some spring onions, dash of oil and thin strips of ginger. The porridge is very smooth and thick. I had one and a half bow!

This stall has a lot of other dishes to offer to its customers – specialties like pig trotter vinegar, curry wild boar meat, suen mui kai and blanch vegetables of choy sum. All these are great wonderful complement to the rice and plain porridge.
Hubby had his plate of rice with two dishes…. the ‘Mui Choy Chue Yoke’ which is actually pork cooked with preserved vegetable and BBQ chicken.

The BBQ chicken has an aromatic flavour. The meat is tender and tasty, infused with the soya sauce. This whole chicken drumstick cost RM6.

This place offers reasonable prices for their food…value for money.
