Tea Time Indulgence at Living Room @ Macalister Mansion Penang
BY CK Lam
Living Room is a great place to indulge for afternoon tea. Located on the ground floor of Macalister Mansion, this all-day dining space with a colourful theme provides a wonderful setting with cosy atmosphere.
On a weekend visit, there is a steady flow of customers. We started tea time with a range of freshly baked quiches, gourmet sandwiches, pastries and breads with freshly brewed coffee and smoothies. Our selection of long black and latte arrived complemented with crisp and golden biscotti.

The creamy smoothies are made combining many fresh fruity choices of orange, berries, yogurt, prune, passionfruit, mango, apple and banana.
At the bread counter there is a choice of white bread, brioche, sourdough, olive ciabatta, crisp baguette, rye bread among others. We get to savour the bread with freshly prepared sweet and savory spread with no preservatives.
Choices include jackfruit & vanilla, juniper & cranberry, orange & pineapple, chamomile & honey, five spice ground nuts, cherry liver pate, black olive tapenade, salted caramel and seared yellowfin tuna with horseradish mayo.
Nothing beats the seared yellowfin tuna with horseradish mayo. At RM16+ per jar, the spread is prepared with many pieces of fish, right amount of flavour and creaminess. The five spice ground nuts jam based on the Chinese snack served in most Chinese restaurants is a unique treat. Executive chef Lance U’ren puts a twist on the boiled peanuts, making it into a creamy nutty spread.
When it comes to sweet jam, some flavors are better than others. The favorite is the salted caramel.
Adding to our meal is lightly toasted savory sandwiches made from house-made bread. The salmon gravlax sandwich tastes delicious with combination of smooth cream, salty flavors and salmon cured with beetroot. This vibrant colour sandwich cost RM8.50.
For RM7.50, we enjoyed the cheddar cheese & sundried tomato sandwich. Chef Lance pile the sandwich with plenty of gooey cheddar cheese, sundried tomato and greens for a satisfying nosh. The cheese added smooth dairy richness to the sandwich.
We had some delightful sampling of quiche and pastries. The quiche is well baked and comes with a choice of spinach with homemade ricotta cheese or smoked duck with leek.
Other pastries include maple walnut plait, miniature vanilla and the popular pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant), priced at RM1.60 each. The flaky and buttery mini French croissant is priced at RM1.40 while a set of four goes for RM5 only.
Currently, all breads and pastries at Living Room are available for purchase at half price after 7pm.

The assortment of cakes provides the sweet treat to end our meal. The moist and rich beetroot and cream cheese cake is a lovely change from the norm.
