It is always interesting to taste something new, especially with great company

Together with a group of friends, we had a meal of rich flavours, aromas and colours of Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine at Al Medina Moroccan Restaurant.

Located in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, the house converted restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating exudes a warm welcome.

Essenze Magazine is a prestigious magazine featuring a vibrant mix of fashion, people, luxury, and many more. An article on Maple Palace Restaurant in Penang appeared in Vol. 34-14 and I had been interviewed for the article.

The interview over lunch at the Chinese restaurant with gracious host Vivien Teoh and Tan Loy Sin was documented and also with photos taken.

This is the version of the article – A Flair of Flavour…

 A FLAIR FOR FLAVOUR

In a land where spicy street food and Hokkien cuisine rule supreme, there is one heavyweight champion that is slowly turning the tide by introducing impeccable Cantonese Szechuan cuisine in a classy setting that is fit for a king. Set in Maple Gold Club, a grand heritage mansion tucked in the millionaire’s row of Penang’s swanky Northam Road (or Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah), is Maple Palace Restaurant. The restaurant has made a name for being one of the top places frequented by the well-heeled millionaires and socialites of Malaysia’s high society.

The proprietor and head-chef of Maple Palace, Tan Loy Sin, or Loy as he goes by, recently hosted celebrated food critic and writer, C.K. Lam, and EZ to sample the restaurant’s new menu.

Lam, who runs one of the most visited food websites in Malaysia is widely regarded as an authority on the Penang food scene and has written for numerous publications in Malaysia and beyond.

It is always nice to see my work in print. This time around my article was published in the Hong Kong Express’s airline UO Magazine, which covers lifestyle topics – travel, leisure, shopping, food adventure and people. The airline, a Hainan Airlines’ subsidiary company has opened a new route to Penang on 27 October 2013.

I was first approached by personnel from Ink, a Singpaore-based publisher to write a story on Penang’s Top10 Eating Experiences. The food story including colourful photos was eventually featured in the inaugural issue of the magazine (December 2013).

Diners will be pleased with the opening of Nona Bali Restaurant at Promenade 28, in Sungai Pinang, Penang. Owned by partners Peter Tait and I Made Sudiarta, Nona Bali is the place for Balinese food cravings in Penang.

The restaurant thrives on set meals throughout lunch and a la carte menu for dinner. While there is no pork on the menu, the restaurant in a casual and comfortable environment offers a variety of seafood, poultry and vegetables. The dishes are prepared combining Balinese culinary traditions. “I source the ingredients locally and from neighbouring Indonesia and Thailand. No MSG and food enhancer is used,”said Sudiarta who heads the kitchen.

The Jawi House Cafe Gallery, offers an eclectic Jawi Peranakan (Straits Muslim) interior with a comfortable atmosphere to entertain friends and family.

Located on Armenian Street in the heritage zone of George Town, Penang, the cafe is owned by Datuk Dr Wazir Jahan Karim, an anthropologist and culture conservationist.

Although Wazir is a good cook herself, having learned from her mother, she often leaves food preparation at the restaurant to her son and head chef Nurilkarim Razha.

Our eyes were drawn to the newly opened Asiatique Kitchen & Lounge in Tanjung Tokong, Penang. The kitchen helmed by young Aldrien Moh offers Modern Australian cooking, with food prepared combining Asian flavors into French cooking techniques.

We were at the fusion theme place for a weekday lunch after it had opened, and we returned recently for dinner.

Traveling is also part of discovering new eating places. This second part of my Kuala Lumpur food article continues with many more interesting dining places.

It is an absolutely great meaty meal at El Cerdo located on Changkat Bukit Bintang. Together with some friends, we sampled El Cerdo’s notable dish of suckling pig and other dishes like Iberico ribs, sausage platter and seafood paella.

The half size piglet is priced at RM188. The waiter gestured us to cut the piglet with a plate. Not only is it a memorable experience for us but the food also delighted our taste buds. The suckling piglet done with amazingly crispy skin and soft meat with melting fat had everyone asking for seconds.

Among the choices of desserts, we had the raspberry sherbet and the rum and raisin ice cream. The latter is far better of the two.

Our trips to Kuala Lumpur had us visiting many places, savoring the city’s food and staying at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral. Recommended by friends Alison and Narelle, the hotel with a casual, hip vibe offers solid bed to help us sleep through the nights.

The hotel is a convenient place of accommodation, especially for those who do not have transport as it is located opposite the KL Sentral transportation hub.
